GREEN YOUTH FARM
North Chicago Green Youth Farm is a youth development program of the Chicago Botanic Garden. The farm, located in Lake County’s Greenbelt Forest Preserve, offers high school students in the underserved communities of North Chicago and Waukegan a paid stipend and the opportunity to learn all aspects of organic farming – from planting seeds, to managing a hive of bees, to cooking with the food they grow and selling it at farm stands and markets. In addition, the students learn how to work together as a team and grow their support system to include their supervisors, program coordinators, legislators, and their fellow participants. The North Shore Garden Club is proud to be one of the sponsors of this worthwhile program.

MERIT PRIZE AWARDS
The North Shore Garden Club grants Merit Prize Awards to Chicago Botanic Garden interns chosen by the club’s scholarship committee, based upon written applications submitted by the interns. The funds come from the profits of our Garden Walk. At an annual awards luncheon, winning interns talk about their backgrounds and past work experiences, and about their career goals. Often they show slides, illustrating their internship work at the Garden.

JENS JENSEN PARK IN HIGHLAND PARK
Jens Jensen Park, originally named “Station Park”, was designed in 1924 by internationally acclaimed landscape architect Jens Jensen. The Rosenwald Memorial, a boulder monument located in the reflecting pool, was given by the North Shore Garden Club in 1930 in memory of Mrs. Julius Rosenwald, the club’s first president. The park with its pool was restored in keeping with Jensen’s original design and rededicated in 2007. A new kiosk, located at the downtown Ravinia train station, was built in 2006 as part of the restoration. It replaced the kiosk that was installed in 1996 across the street in Jens Jensen Park to commemorate the North Shore Garden Club’s 80th anniversary.
